At an arraignment, the judge calls you in front of the court and explains what the charges are and that you have a right to an attorney if there is jail time involved. If you cannot afford an attorney and you qualify, you will be appointed one by the court. If you hire an attorney prior to the arraignment, you will not have to go to the arraignment.
